Sussex County, DE Transfer & Collection Stations: Where to Take Junk (Millsboro, Seaford, Georgetown)

In Sussex County, Delaware, there's no county-run landfill drop-off like there is across the line in Maryland. Disposal runs through the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA), and it splits into two very different kinds of sites: collection stations for bagged household trash and transfer stations for bigger loads. Knowing the difference saves a wasted trip. Details below are from DSWA's transfer station and collection station pages; call DSWA's Citizens' Response Line at 1-800-404-7080 to confirm before you go.
Quick facts at a glance
- Collection stations: $1 per bag of household trash, credit card only, free recycling.
- Long Neck (Millsboro) and Omar add Sunday hours May–September.
- Transfer stations (Rt. 5 Harbeson, Milford): Monday–Saturday 7 AM–3 PM, pay by weight.
- Transfer stations take appliances (refrigerant recovered on site) and up to 4 tires per load.
- Delaware waste only; every load must be tarped.
- No C&D debris from contractors or from dump/double-axle trailers.
Collection stations: bagged household trash
DSWA's collection stations work on a pay-as-you-throw basis: $1 per bag of household garbage (yard waste fees vary by load type), paid by credit card only. They also take recycling free of charge for Delaware residents. Sussex County sites include:
- Long Neck Collection Station — 28963 Mount Joy Road, Millsboro. Monday–Saturday 8:30 AM–3:30 PM, plus Sundays 10 AM–2 PM from May through September.
- Bridgeville Collection Station — 16539 Polk Road, Bridgeville (handy from Seaford). Monday–Saturday 8:30 AM–3:30 PM.
- Omar Collection Station — 33086 Burton Farm Road, Frankford. Monday–Saturday 8:30 AM–3:30 PM, plus summer Sundays.
- Ellendale Collection Station — 13870 S. Old State Road, Ellendale. Monday–Saturday 8:30 AM–3:30 PM.
The catch: collection stations are built for bagged trash and recycling. A couch, a mattress or a pile of old lumber isn't a bag.
Transfer stations: bulky loads by weight
For bigger loads, you drive onto a scale, unload where the weighmaster directs you, weigh out, and pay by the difference. Transfer stations accept cash, check and major credit cards. The two that serve most of Sussex County are:
- Rt. 5 Transfer Station — 29997 John P. Healy Drive, Harbeson (between Georgetown, Milton and Rehoboth). Monday–Saturday 7 AM–3 PM.
- Milford Transfer Station — 1170 S. DuPont Boulevard, Milford. Monday–Saturday 7 AM–3 PM.
Transfer stations take residential household trash, white goods such as refrigerators, AC units and other appliances (DSWA technicians recover the refrigerant and recycle the metal), up to four passenger tires per load, and separated yard waste.
Limits that trip people up
- Delaware waste only. DSWA facilities don't accept waste generated outside Delaware.
- Construction and demolition debris rules. C&D material is not accepted from contractors, or from anyone using a dump trailer or double-axle trailer, at DSWA transfer stations. That matters if you're tearing out a deck or shed.
- Covered loads. Every load must be tarped or covered.
- Separate yard waste from trash before you arrive.
- Bring help. You unload it yourself.
