Accomack County Convenience Centers vs. Junk Removal: What Eastern Shore of Virginia Residents Should Know

On Virginia's Eastern Shore, most households handle trash themselves — there's no curbside pickup in much of the county, so the convenience centers are part of everyday life. They're great for weekly bags and recycling. They're a lot less great when you're facing a houseful of furniture, an old fridge or a pile of renovation debris. Here's how Accomack County's system works, based on the county's Convenience Centers & Recycling and Landfill & Transfer Station pages.
Quick facts at a glance
- Seven convenience centers, open 7 AM–6 PM, each closed one day a week.
- Electronics only at Fishers Corner; household hazardous waste only at Painter (Sat 10–2).
- Yard waste only at Painter and Grangeville.
- Tires: up to four per visit, no rims.
- Northern Landfill (Atlantic) and South Transfer Station (Melfa) take larger and construction loads.
- Commercial waste must go to the landfill, not convenience centers.
The seven convenience centers
Accomack County runs seven convenience centers, listed here north to south with the day each one is closed (per the Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore recycling list):
- Horntown — 5536 Fleming Mill Road (closed Thursdays)
- Chincoteague — 5073 Deep Hole Road (closed Tuesdays)
- Makemie Park — 9312 Neal Parker Road (closed Wednesdays)
- Fishers Corner — 26213 Parksley Road (closed Tuesdays)
- Tasley — 24574 Coastal Blvd. (closed Wednesdays)
- Grangeville — 31138 Seaside Road (closed Tuesdays)
- Painter — 16490 Wayside Drive (closed Thursdays)
Centers are open 7 AM–6 PM on their open days and close on county holidays. A few services are site-specific: electronics recycling only at Fishers Corner, household hazardous waste only at Painter (Saturdays 10 AM–2 PM), and yard waste only at Painter and Grangeville.
What convenience centers take
- Limited quantities of household waste generated in Accomack County
- Single-stream recycling and glass (purple cans)
- Scrap metal, including appliances, in a separate container
- Tires: car or small truck, no rims, up to four per visit
- Motor oil, batteries, cell phones and plastic bags
There's also a "Put & Take" area for reusable items in good condition (with the attendant's OK; no electronics or upholstery). Commercial, business and industrial waste isn't allowed — businesses must use the landfill.
The Northern Landfill and South Transfer Station
For bigger loads, the county operates two scale facilities that accept most household, commercial and construction waste generated in Accomack County:
- Northern Landfill — 9400 Cutler Lane, Atlantic, VA. 757-824-5737.
- South Transfer Station — 16640 Hollies Church Rd., Melfa, VA. 757-787-2814. (The county has posted that it is not accepting metal at this site until further notice.)
Both list hours of Monday–Saturday, 8:30 AM–4 PM and are closed Thanksgiving and Christmas; call ahead, since the county's pages have shown different day ranges. Prohibited items include hazardous waste (including asbestos), liquids, closed drums, vehicles and equipment, and pressurized containers like propane tanks.

Convenience center or junk removal?
The convenience center is the right call for weekly trash, recycling, a couple of tires or a single appliance you can lift into your own truck.
A junk removal crew makes more sense when:
- You're clearing a whole house — an estate in Onancock, a rental in Chincoteague, a family farmhouse.
- Items are heavy or awkward: sleeper sofas, chest freezers, pianos, upholstered furniture (which also can't go in the Put & Take).
- You'd need multiple trips to Atlantic or Melfa.
- You don't have a truck or trailer, or you're managing the property from off the Shore.
- There's light demolition involved, such as an old shed, deck or interior tear-out.
