Furniture Removal in Seaford, DE: Where to Take It, Donate It or Have It Hauled

Getting rid of an old couch, a heavy dresser or a full set of bedroom furniture in Seaford takes more planning than most people expect. The trash cart won't hold it. The nearest drop-off site doesn't take large bulky items, and the City of Seaford's free bulk pickup only happens once a year. This guide covers your real options for furniture removal in Seaford, DE: what the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA) accepts and where, how the City of Seaford Clean-Up Week works, when donating makes sense, and when it's easier to have a crew haul it away. Hours, fees and rules change, so call DSWA's Citizens' Response Line at 1-800-404-7080 before you load the truck.
Quick facts at a glance
- The closest DSWA site to Seaford is the Bridgeville Collection Station (16539 Polk Road). It takes bagged household trash at $1 per bag, but not large bulky items like sofas or mattresses.
- Bulky loads go to a DSWA landfill or transfer station. In Sussex County, that means Jones Crossroads Landfill near Georgetown (Mon–Sat, 7 AM–5 PM) or the Rt. 5 Transfer Station in Harbeson (Mon–Sat, 7 AM–3 PM).
- DSWA's fiscal 2027 fee for solid waste is $80 per ton, with a $7.50 minimum per vehicle. Rates run July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
- DSWA accepts waste generated in Delaware only, and every load must be covered or tarped.
- The City of Seaford's free Clean-Up Week is for city residents only. In 2026 it ran May 11–15.
- Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's ReStore takes some clean, gently used furniture, but not mattresses or box springs.
Option 1: The DSWA collection station near Seaford
DSWA runs a network of collection stations for everyday household trash. The one most Seaford residents use is:
- Bridgeville Collection Station: 16539 Polk Road, Bridgeville, DE 19933. Open Monday–Saturday, 8:30 AM–3:30 PM.
Collection stations work on a pay-as-you-throw system. Household trash costs $1.00 per bag, and DSWA only takes credit cards at these sites. The catch for furniture is that DSWA's own collection station page lists large bulky items, loose (unbagged) trash, and construction and demolition debris as not accepted. A recliner, sectional or mattress won't be taken at Bridgeville.
The collection station is still useful during a furniture cleanout. You can bring the bagged trash that comes out of drawers and closets. Recycling is free there for Delaware residents: single-stream paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, glass, and cans, plus household motor oil and household batteries.
Option 2: Jones Crossroads Landfill or the Rt. 5 Transfer Station
For anything too big for a trash bag, DSWA directs residents to its landfills and transfer stations. These sites have scales and charge by weight. The two that serve Sussex County are:
- Jones Crossroads Landfill: 28560 Landfill Lane, Georgetown, DE 19947. Open Monday–Saturday, 7 AM–5 PM. The recycling center there keeps shorter hours, 8:30 AM–3:30 PM.
- Rt. 5 Transfer Station: 29997 John P. Healy Drive, Harbeson, DE 19951. Open Monday–Saturday, 7 AM–3 PM. See DSWA's Rt. 5 page.
Here's how a visit works, according to DSWA's landfill guide. You drive onto the scale and stop at the scale house. A weighmaster sends you to the right area, and residents usually use a small-load area set apart from the active landfill. On the way out you weigh again and pay for the difference. Landfills take cash, check and major credit cards.
What it costs
DSWA's Fiscal Year 2027 user fee schedule (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027) sets solid waste and construction debris at $80.00 per ton at Jones Crossroads and the Rt. 5 Transfer Station, with a $7.50 minimum charge per vehicle. Your actual cost depends on the weight of the load, and that varies a lot with the type of furniture. Particleboard dressers, solid wood tables and sleeper sofas weigh very different amounts.
Before you go
- Call ahead about your items. DSWA's landfill page lists household trash, construction debris, appliances (white goods) and tires, but it doesn't list furniture by name. Call 1-800-404-7080 to confirm where a couch, mattress or other bulky piece should go.
- Cover your load. DSWA says all loads must be covered or tarped.
- Keep yard waste separate. If you're also clearing a yard, yard waste must not be mixed with trash.
- Bring help. DSWA recommends bringing someone to help you unload.
- Delaware waste only. Out-of-state waste isn't accepted.

Option 3: City of Seaford Clean-Up Week
Once a year, Seaford Public Works holds a Clean-Up Week and hauls away unwanted materials at no charge. It's for city residents only. In 2026 it ran May 11–15, with a different area of the city scheduled each day. The rules the city posted for 2026 were:
- Heavy materials such as stoves and furniture are collected separately, because special equipment may be needed.
- Bags and containers can't weigh more than 50 pounds when full. Use disposable containers, because they won't be returned.
- Everything must be at the curb line by 8:30 AM on your area's day. City crews can't go onto private property, and once a street has been cleared, the trucks won't come back.
- Debris from work done by a private contractor, such as tree cutting or construction, is the contractor's responsibility.
- Household garbage, paint, hazardous chemicals and appliances that contain or may have contained Freon (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners) are not picked up.
If you can wait until next spring and live inside city limits, Clean-Up Week is the cheapest option. The city hasn't posted 2027 dates yet, so watch the Public Works page or call City Hall at 302-629-9173. Public Works also runs leaf and limb pickup, but that's for yard waste, not furniture.
Option 4: Donate furniture that's still in good shape
Usable furniture doesn't have to go to the landfill. Sussex County Habitat for Humanity's ReStore sells donated furniture, appliances and building materials and uses the proceeds to build homes in the county. The ReStore is on Route 9, about three miles west of Route 1, at 18501 Stamper Drive, Lewes. You can reach it at (302) 855-1156.
The ReStore is picky about what it takes, and it says space is currently limited because of an expansion project. Its posted guidelines include:
- Furniture must be clean and from a smoke-free home, with no rips, stains, pet hair or missing pieces. Even furniture that meets the rules may be turned down for lack of space.
- Wood tables, chairs, dressers, nightstands, bookshelves, rockers, patio furniture and upholstered sofas in spotless condition are on the accepted list.
- Mattresses and box springs are not accepted. Neither are bunk beds, cribs, entertainment centers, oversized desks, or furniture with water damage, mold or odors. Bed frames are temporarily on the not-accepted list.
- For pickups, drivers can't carry items up or down stairs, and whether to accept a donation is up to the driver.
Check the ReStore's current list before you call, since it changes. If a piece is borderline, have a backup plan in case it's refused at the curb.

- Decide what's worth donating before removal day, and check it against the ReStore's list.
- If you're hauling it yourself, tarp and strap the load. DSWA requires covered loads.
- For a quote, send photos of each piece and mention stairs or tight spots. That helps us give you an accurate estimate.
