Newland Park Landfill & Bulk Trash in Salisbury, MD: A 2026 Homeowner's Guide

If you live in Salisbury or anywhere in Wicomico County, every couch, mattress and garage full of clutter eventually leads to the same place: the county's Newland Park Landfill on Brick Kiln Road. It's well run and affordable, but the rules about permits, scales and "items not covered" catch a lot of people the first time. This guide pulls together the current details from the Wicomico County Solid Waste Division so you can plan a trip — or decide it isn't worth the afternoon.
Always double-check hours and fees with the county before you load up; they change, especially around holidays.

Where Newland Park Landfill is and when it's open
The landfill and the county's Solid Waste office share the same complex at 6948 Brick Kiln Road, Salisbury, MD 21801 (office phone 410-548-4935). There are really three different "hours" to know:
- Newland Park convenience center (the drop-off area for permit holders): open daily, 6 AM–6 PM. The brush area runs 7 AM–6 PM.
- Scales (pay by weight, no permit needed): Monday–Saturday, 7 AM–4 PM.
- Office (to buy a permit in person): Monday–Friday, 7:15 AM–3:15 PM.
The county posts a yearly holiday schedule. For example, everything is closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day in 2026, while on some holidays (like Veterans Day, November 11) the office is closed but the landfill and scales stay open.
Option 1: The household refuse permit
To use the convenience centers for household trash you need a county permit. According to the county's permit rules:
- The first permit is $65 per year; a second vehicle is $30.
- You'll need the vehicle registration with an address that matches your Wicomico County address (new applicants also bring a driver's license, or other proof of address if they don't match).
- As of February 2025 the county no longer sells out-of-county permits — so a Delaware or Worcester County resident cleaning out a parent's Salisbury home can't just buy one.
- Recyclables don't need a permit at all.
The 11 convenience centers
Besides Newland Park itself, the county runs convenience centers in Airport (Fooks Rd), Bivalve, Delmar, Fruitland, Hebron, Mardela Springs, Parsonsburg, Quantico, Sharptown and Wango. Those outlying sites are generally open 8 AM–5 PM on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and 1–5 PM on Sunday, and they're closed Tuesdays and Thursdays. Electronics are only accepted at Newland Park; batteries, oyster shells, oil filters and propane tanks are accepted at all of them (county list).
Option 2: Crossing the scales
No permit? You can still bring a load to Newland Park and pay by weight. You weigh in, unload where staff direct you, weigh out, and pay the difference. As of January 1, 2026 the tipping fee is $88 per ton with a $10 minimum per load.
What the permit does not cover
This is where most homeowners get surprised. The following "non-covered items" are not accepted at convenience centers and must go across the scales at Brick Kiln Road:
- Renovation and construction materials — shingles, carpet, windows, doors, drywall, wood, lumber and any type of fencing.
- Appliances with refrigerant (fridges, freezers, AC units): $20 per unit.
- Tires: $2 off the rim, $5 on the rim, limit 10 per trip.
- Large tree parts over 16 inches in diameter and 8 feet long (and no stumps).
- Asbestos is handled only by appointment with special bagging rules — this is not something to bring on your own.
Concrete and brick aren't taken at the landfill; the county points residents to a private recycler instead.

A realistic DIY landfill run, step by step
- Sort first. Separate recyclables (cardboard, metal, clean yard waste), regular household trash, and non-covered items like carpet or an old fridge. Mixed loads take longer at the scales.
- Check the day. If you're headed to an outlying convenience center, remember Tuesdays and Thursdays are closed.
- Secure the load. Tarp and strap anything that could blow out on Route 13 or Route 50.
- Plan for heavy lifting at both ends. You load it at home and unload it yourself at the landfill.
- Bring payment for scale fees and any per-item charges.
When hiring junk removal makes more sense
For a few bags or a single chair, a permit and a pickup truck are hard to beat. Hiring a crew starts to make sense when:
- You'd need more than one trip — a whole garage, basement or rental turnover.
- The job includes heavy or awkward items like sleeper sofas, pianos, hot tubs or appliances down a staircase.
- You live out of county and can't buy a permit, but you're cleaning out a Salisbury property.
- There's renovation debris that has to cross the scales anyway.
- You don't have a truck — or the time.
