If you're searching for junk removal prices in Salisbury, MD, you've probably noticed that very few companies post a single number. There's a good reason for that. Two loads that look the same size can cost very different amounts to remove, depending on what's in them, where they sit in the house, and what the landfill charges to take them. This guide explains the six things that shape a junk removal quote in Salisbury and the rest of Wicomico County. It uses the public fees the Wicomico County Solid Waste Division and the City of Salisbury post, so you can see where the money actually goes and how to keep your own cost down.

We don't publish prices in this guide. Every job is different, and the quote is free. If you'd rather skip the reading, request a free estimate or call or text (443) 365-1942.

Quick facts at a glance

  • Bulky loads that aren't covered by a county household permit go across the scales at Newland Park Landfill, 6948 Brick Kiln Road. The scales are open Monday–Saturday, 7 AM–4 PM.
  • The county's posted scale rate is $88 per ton with a $10 minimum. The County Council has approved $100 per ton starting January 1, 2027 (Resolution 93-2026).
  • Appliances with refrigerant cost $20 per unit at the landfill. Tires are $2 off the rim or $5 on the rim, up to 10 per trip.
  • Renovation materials such as carpet, drywall, windows, doors, lumber and fencing must cross the scales. Household permits don't cover them.
  • Scrap metal, most electronics, cardboard and clothing are recyclables the county takes with no permit.
  • The City of Salisbury runs free bulk pickup weeks in March and September (3 items per home), and a paid Monday bulk pickup the rest of the year.

1. Volume: how much space the load takes

Volume is the biggest single factor for most junk removal companies, because it decides how much of the truck your items fill and how many trips the job needs. A single recliner and a garage that's packed to the rafters are completely different jobs. Our own quotes start the same way: we look at how much space your items will take up in our truck, then factor in item type and access.

The easiest way to get an accurate quote is to send photos of everything that's going, including what's behind or under other things. Surprises found on the day, like a second freezer in the shed, are the most common reason a final number changes.

2. Item type: some things carry their own fees

Some items cost more to get rid of than their size suggests, because the landfill or recycler charges for them separately. Wicomico County's household permit rules list these "items not covered by permit," which have to go to the Brick Kiln Road facility and cross the scales:

  • Appliances containing refrigerant or coolant (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners): a fee of $20 per unit.
  • Tires: $2 off the rim and $5 on the rim, with a limit of 10 per vehicle per trip. More than 10 tires is charged at $380 per ton, and oversized tires aren't accepted.
  • Renovation and construction materials, including shingles, carpet, windows, doors, drywall, wood, lumber and any type of fencing. These are weighed and charged by the ton.
  • Large tree parts over 16 inches in diameter and 8 feet long. Stumps aren't accepted.
  • Concrete and brick aren't taken at the landfill. The county refers residents to a private recycler, Stone Tech.

Weight matters too. Because the scale fee is charged by the ton, a load of plaster, tile or wet carpet can cost far more to dump than a bigger load of light furniture. That's why renovation debris is usually priced differently from household junk.

3. Access and labor: stairs, long carries and take-apart pieces

A sofa sitting in the garage takes a few minutes to load. The same sofa in a third-floor walk-up, or a basement with a tight turn at the bottom of the stairs, takes longer and may need two or three people. Things that add labor include:

  • Stairs, especially narrow or winding ones
  • Long carries from the back of a property, or from a condo with no elevator
  • Items that have to be taken apart to fit through a doorway, like bed frames, sectionals, playsets or exercise equipment
  • Heavy items such as sleeper sofas, safes, pianos, or hot tubs
  • Loose items that need bagging or boxing before they can be carried out

If you can move small items to the garage or the curb ahead of time, it can shorten the job. Leave the heavy lifting to the crew.

4. Disposal fees: what Newland Park charges

Every load that doesn't get recycled or donated ends up somewhere with a disposal fee. In Wicomico County, that's usually Newland Park Landfill. Here is how the county's own charges work, checked on November 2, 2026:

  • Scale fee: $88 per ton with a $10 minimum fee, per the county's permit rules. You weigh in, unload, weigh out and pay for the difference.
  • 2027 increase: Resolution 93-2026, adopted with amendments on June 2, 2026, sets the tipping fee at $88 from July 1, 2026 and $100 per ton from January 1, 2027, with the $10 minimum unchanged.
  • Household permit: $65 a year for the first vehicle and $30 for a second. The permit is tied to one vehicle and covers household trash from the registered Wicomico County address only. As of February 2025, the county no longer sells out-of-county permits.
  • Commercial use: the county says permits used to haul commercial trash are subject to suspension or a fine. A hired crew can't use a homeowner's permit, so its loads are weighed and paid for at the scales.
  • Hours: scales Monday–Saturday, 7 AM–4 PM; office Monday–Friday, 7:15 AM–3:15 PM (410-548-4935).

Holidays matter if you're planning a trip yourself. On the county's 2026 holiday schedule, the landfill and scales stay open on Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11) while the office and outlying convenience centers close. Everything is closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, and on December 24 and 25.

5. Recyclables and donations can lower the weight

Anything that's recycled or donated doesn't have to be weighed and paid for as trash. According to the county's recycling list, these are accepted with no permit needed:

  • All scrap metal and electronics, except TVs and computer monitors. Electronics are taken at Newland Park only, per the county's drop-off center list.
  • Cardboard (not wax-coated or greasy), paper, aluminum and steel cans
  • Clothing, shoes and handbags
  • Motor oil and antifreeze, up to 5 gallons per household
  • Batteries (not lithium) and propane tanks, at any convenience center
  • Up to 5 pallets free for Wicomico County homeowners at the brush pile. More than 5 go across the scales at $44 per ton.

A metal bed frame, an old grill or a pile of cardboard boxes doesn't need to share space with landfill trash. Good-condition furniture can often go to a local charity instead of the landfill, as long as it meets the charity's rules.

Leftover paint

Paint is one of the items people most often try to add to a junk load. The City of Salisbury won't pick up paint or paint cans. Since April 2026, Maryland has a PaintCare program overseen by the Maryland Department of the Environment. Its drop-off sites take house paint, primers, stains, sealers and varnishes free of charge, and households with 100 gallons or more can ask for a free large-volume pickup. Use PaintCare's site locator to find the nearest drop-off and call ahead before you go.

6. Timing: free city bulk weeks vs. hauling now

If you live inside Salisbury city limits and only have a few items, timing can save you money. The city's Field Operations department runs two kinds of bulk pickup:

  • Free bulk weeks. These are held in the third week of March and the third week of September. In 2026 they ran March 16–20 and September 21–25. You have to schedule in advance with Field Operations at 410-548-3177. There's a limit of 3 bulk items per home, and mattresses, box springs and anything with fabric must be wrapped in plastic and taped. Appliances and construction materials such as wood, sinks, toilets and swing sets aren't included, and apartment and condo complexes aren't covered.
  • Paid Monday bulk pickup. The city's Yard Waste & Bulk Trash guidelines, linked from the Field Operations page, list a $30 base charge for 3 items, picked up on Mondays and booked through the City Finance Department at 410-548-3110. Appliances add a per-item charge: refrigerator $26, freezer $26, air conditioner $22, washer $6, dishwasher $6, dryer $4 and stove $4. Confirm the current fee when you call.

The city won't pick up motor oil, antifreeze, paint, batteries, tires, propane tanks, construction and demolition materials, eviction contents, or items its Sanitation Superintendent considers too heavy or bulky. For those, the city sends residents to the county landfill at 410-548-4935.

The trade-off is time. If you're moving out, clearing a rental between tenants, or have more than three items, waiting for the next free week usually isn't practical.

How to keep your junk removal cost down

  1. Sort before you call. Set aside anything you'll recycle, donate or sell.
  2. Use the free city week if you're a city resident with 3 items or fewer and you can wait until March or September.
  3. Take paint to a PaintCare site instead of adding it to the load.
  4. Bring small stuff to one spot, like the garage or driveway, so the crew spends less time carrying.
  5. Send clear photos of everything for a more accurate free quote, and mention stairs, appliances and tires up front.
  6. Book one job instead of several. Combining the garage, basement and shed into one visit is usually more efficient than three separate pickups.

Frequently asked questions

How much does junk removal cost in Salisbury, MD?

There's no single price, because cost depends on volume, item type, access and disposal. Part of every quote is the disposal cost: Wicomico County's Newland Park Landfill charges $88 per ton with a $10 minimum, plus $20 per refrigerant appliance. For an actual number for your items, request a free estimate at instajunkremoval.net/contact or call (443) 365-1942.

Does the City of Salisbury pick up bulk trash?

Yes, for city residents. Free bulk weeks are held in the third week of March and September (3 items per home, scheduled through Field Operations at 410-548-3177). The city's guidelines also list a paid Monday bulk pickup with a $30 base charge for 3 items, booked through the Finance Department at 410-548-3110, with extra charges for appliances.

Will Newland Park Landfill fees go up in 2027?

Yes. Wicomico County Council Resolution 93-2026 sets the tipping fee at $100 per ton from January 1, 2027, up from $88, with the $10 minimum unchanged. Check with the Solid Waste Division at 410-548-4935 before you go.

Can a junk removal company use my county landfill permit?

No. Wicomico County household permits are registered to one vehicle and cover household trash from the registered address only. The county says permits can't be transferred, and using one to haul commercial trash can lead to suspension or a fine. A hired crew pays for its loads at the scales.

What can't go in a junk removal load in Salisbury?

Hazardous materials such as paint, chemicals and fuel shouldn't go in a regular junk load. Maryland's PaintCare program takes leftover house paint, stains and varnish for free at its drop-off sites. Asbestos is accepted by the county only with 24-hour notice and special double-bagging rules, and concrete and brick go to a private recycler rather than the landfill.
