Berlin's historic streets and the neighborhoods around it — plus Ocean Pines and the rest of northern Worcester County — share a few disposal options for big items. Which one fits depends on where you live, how much you have, and whether it's household junk or renovation debris. Here's a plain-language guide based on the Town of Berlin's special collections policy and Worcester County Solid Waste.

Quick facts at a glance

  • Town bulk pickup: second Wednesday monthly, $25, four items max, register by 4 PM the day before.
  • Wrap mattresses and fabric items in sealed plastic.
  • No construction materials, paint, yard waste or tires in Town bulk pickup.
  • Berlin convenience center (Mill Haven Road) is closed Wednesdays; permit or $1 bag tags required.
  • Furniture and appliances must go to the Central Landfill in Newark.
  • Central Landfill: Monday–Saturday 7:30 AM–4 PM, $80 per ton.

Option 1: The Town of Berlin's monthly bulk pickup

Since September 2025 the Town has offered a monthly bulk pickup on the second Wednesday of each month for occupied residential properties inside Town limits. Key rules:

  • $25 fee, paid with a registration form at Town Hall, 10 William Street.
  • Four items per household, per collection. A box or bag of small items under 50 pounds counts as one item.
  • Forms are accepted starting 30 days before and must be in by 4 PM the day before collection.
  • Items must be at the curb by 6 AM.
  • Mattresses, box springs and any fabric items must be wrapped in plastic and sealed with tape.

Accepted items include furniture, carpets and rugs, mattresses, tables and chairs, toilets, sinks, appliances and electronics. Not accepted: hazardous waste, construction materials (doors, windows, cabinets, countertops, lumber, fencing, drywall), paint, yard waste, propane tanks, chemicals, automotive fluids and tires. Anything over the four-item limit stays at the curb and becomes the owner's responsibility. Questions go to Berlin Public Works at 410-641-4001.

Option 2: Worcester County convenience center in Berlin

Worcester County runs the Berlin Homeowners Convenience Center at 9636 Mill Haven Road (410-641-4910). It's open 7:30 AM–5:30 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 1–5 PM on Sunday, and closed Wednesdays. To use it you need an annual homeowner permit ($100 for the first two vehicles in a household) or the county's pay-as-you-throw bag tags ($1 per bag up to 33 gallons). Yard waste is no longer accepted at the Berlin site.

Option 3: The Central Landfill in Newark

The county is clear: bulk items such as furniture and appliances must go to the Central Landfill, at 7091 Central Site Lane, Newark, MD (410-632-3177). Construction debris — drywall, decking, shingles, carpet — also goes there, at the construction/demolition tipping fee.

  • Hours: Monday–Saturday, 7:30 AM–4 PM. Nothing that needs to go up on the landfill hill is accepted after 3:45 PM.
  • Closed Sundays and on listed holidays (including Thanksgiving and Christmas).
  • Tipping fee: $80 per ton for household trash and $80 per ton for construction and demolition material.

From downtown Berlin, Newark is a drive south on Route 113 — doable for one load, tedious for several.

Which option fits your situation?

  • Four or fewer household items, inside Town limits, no rush: the Town's $25 monthly bulk pickup is hard to beat.
  • Bagged household trash: the Berlin convenience center with a permit or bag tags.
  • A truckload you can lift and haul yourself: the Central Landfill in Newark.
  • Renovation debris (cabinets, doors, drywall, fencing): excluded from Town bulk pickup, so it's the landfill or a hauler.
  • Whole rooms, a garage, an estate or a rental turnover, or anything heavy inside the house: a junk removal crew.
